February is heart health month, and “stress is a significant and contributing factor to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease,” says Shilagh Mirgain, PhD, a UW Health psychologist. Dr. Migrain works with the Preventive Cardiology group to teach patients how to manage stress at home and at work, and make healthy adjustments to reduce their risk for cardiac disease as well as enhance the quality of their lives.
On this program, Dr. Mirgain, who leads a support group, “Skills for a Happy Heart,” shares effective techniques to manage stress, deal with difficult emotions and people, address loneliness and isolation, and bring more mindful awareness into one’s life.
